Objective
To protect the open communicating stairs connecting a six-floor atrium from a fire without sacrificing aesthetics.
Background
Hines - a global real estate firm - commissioned a 47-story, one-million-square-foot office tower in downtown Houston as both a site for its global headquarters and a reimagined office space. The Hines offices comprising levels 30 – 35 required an opening protective that would separate the space into sections of three floors or less in the event of a fire.
Solution
Griesenbeck consulted with Kendall/Heaton Associates and McKeon engineers to find the best option - the AC8807 bi-parting horizontal sliding accordion fire door with egress. The atrium would be protected, and the door would be hidden in a decorative wall. On Level 32, Griesenbeck installed the fire door which measures a combined 70’ 7” W x 10’ H and navigates four 18” radius corners.
Result
The office-space dreams and life safety needs of an $84 billion company were realized thanks to the technological advancements made by McKeon with the extra-large accordion fire door.
