McKEON Accordion Fire Shutter Protects Hines Headquarters at Texas Tower

Objective

The City of Victoria and University of Houston – Victoria (“UHV”) partnered to redesign Ben Wilson Street, the main access road to the expanding campus, in an effort to increase walkability and safety while providing an energy-efficient, prominent focal point for the community.

Background

The long-awaited improvements began on Ben Wilson Street in 2022 to provide better visibility and improved pedestrian transits of both UHV and Victoria overall. Architect Freese and Nichols designed the clock tower to be a functional enhancement to the campus with alternating UHV signage and digital marquees on the top third of the tower.

Solution

Griesenbeck installed four Kalwall panels with trapped sills that sit atop the marquee spaces creating a beacon effect with customizable backlighting. One wall is hinged to serve as an access panel.

Result

The redevelopment of the area provides current and future UHV students safer pathways to go to class or events, and the inclusion of Kalwall is an investment in the long-term utility and beautification of the clock tower.
