Objective

To incorporate natural daylight into the building by using the largest single-piece walkable glass skylight.

Background

Lovett Commercial purchased the Barbara Jordan Post Office site in 2015 with plans to renovate and reposition it as a mixed-use development. Due to the historical building code restrictions, daylighting the southern quadrant was dependent on a skylight application to bring natural light to the interior during the day and to light the roof garden at night.

Solution

Griesenbeck provided design assistance for the project and sourced and safely installed the largest single lite walkable skylights ever done in the United States. With some skylights 10’6” in diameter and weighing over one ton each, Griesenbeck installed 40 custom skylights on the roof (26 walkable, 14 non-walkable) and 62 custom walkable skylights above the old post office loading dock.

Result

The glass skylights allowed the roof to be converted into the “Skylawn” where visitors can enjoy the beautiful Houston skyline view, and guests below also benefit from the daylight.
